Abstract

Two human thyroid autoimmune diseases are well known and typically the cause of thyroid dysfunction. The primary cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune mediated destruction of the thyroid gland, referred to as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In the case of Graves' disease hyperthyroidism is initially generated by antibodies which stimulate the thyroid and consequently resulting in the overproduction of thyroid hormones. Both diseases are in the focus of research activities at the Institute of Automation and Control at Graz University of Technology where a major goal is the development of model-based approaches for generating recommender systems assisting both medical staff and patients. For the mentioned thyroid diseases’ simulation frameworks allowing simulating a variety of patients throughout the entire course of the individual disease have been developed. Furthermore, based on derived mathematical models, treatment algorithms relying either on established methods out of the automatic control field or the machine learning domain were developed, implemented and thoroughly validated. Throughout this presentation selected results mainly from the activities of automatically treating patients suffering of Graves’ disease will be presented. This also includes results of a comparative study in which medical staff with different levels of experience treated so-called virtual patients who were also treated using the developed algorithms.
